What a cookie actually does

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. It is not a program and it cannot run on your device. On its own it usually holds a short label and a value, and it is sent back to the site that set it the next time you load a page.

We use them for the ordinary jobs a course website needs: keeping your preferences as you move between pages, remembering that a form has been submitted, and — where you have agreed — measuring which pages about English courses in the United Kingdom are actually being read. If you are weighing up a study pathway such as IELTS preparation or Business English, cookies are what stop the site from resetting every time you open a new page.

Some storage works in a similar way but stays inside your browser, on your device only. Our site uses both, and this cookie policy covers both. Where the wording below says "cookies", read it as covering that local browser storage as well.

Your choice

You decide which cookies run

The banner that appears when you first visit asks whether you accept or decline the optional cookies. Strictly necessary ones stay because the site cannot work without them. Your answer is stored, so the banner does not reappear on every page.

You can change your mind at any time. Most browsers also let you clear stored cookies, block third-party cookies, or refuse them entirely — the settings live under Privacy or Site Settings in your browser menu.

  • Strictly necessary Keeps the site running: page delivery, form protection, and remembering your cookie choice. These cannot be switched off from inside the site.
  • Preferences Remember small choices you make while browsing, so course pages do not reset as you move around the site. Set only if you accept.
  • Measurement Tells us which pages and study pathways visitors read, in aggregate, so we can improve them. Set only if you accept.
  • Embedded content Some pages may show content hosted elsewhere, which can set its own cookies. Where that happens, you are asked first.

Blocking optional cookies does not stop you reading course information, checking entry requirements, or contacting the academy.

Third parties and how long cookies stay

Most cookies on this site are set by us. A small number may be set by services we use to run the site and understand how it is read.

  • Session cookies

These last only while your browser is open. They carry you from one page to the next without losing your place, then disappear when you close the window.

  • Stored preferences

These stay on your device for a set period — typically up to twelve months — so the site remembers your choice the next time you visit. Clearing your browser data removes them early.

  • Measurement cookies

Set by an analytics service on our behalf, and only if you accept. They record pages visited and how you arrived, in aggregate. We do not use them to build a profile of you as an individual, and we do not sell that information.

  • Content hosted elsewhere

If a page includes something hosted by another organisation, that organisation may set its own cookies under its own policy. We cannot read or control those cookies, and we link to the relevant policy where we can.

Questions visitors ask us

Short answers to the points that come up most often about cookies on a course website. If yours is not here, the academy office can help.

Do I have to accept cookies to look at courses?

No. You can read every course page, compare study pathways and look up entry requirements without accepting optional cookies. Declining only turns off preference and measurement cookies. If part of a page cannot load without them, we say so at that point.

How do I change the choice I already made?

Clear the cookies this site has stored in your browser, then reload any page. The consent notice will appear again and you can answer differently. Browser menus usually list this under Privacy, Site Settings, or Clear Browsing Data, and you can clear only thedress.digital if you prefer not to lose everything else.

Do cookies decide anything about my course enquiry?

No. A cookie never decides a place on a course, a fee, or a start date. Those are handled by the academy team after you send an enquiry or register. Cookies only help the site work and tell us which pages are useful, which is why measuring them separately from your enquiry matters.

Where can I read the rest of your policies?

This page covers cookies only. Personal data, how long we keep enquiry records and your rights are set out in the Privacy Policy, and the rules for using this website — including course booking terms — are in the Terms & Conditions.

Talk to the academy office

If something on this page is unclear, or you would rather ask about cookies alongside a question about courses, the office answers during normal working hours. Registration itself happens on the contact page, where the enquiry and registration details are collected.
